Just when you thought the wave of celebrity-created apps had passed, Shakira graces us with her own game. In a conversation with Refinery29, she explains the story behind the app, Love Rocks starring Shakira, and also settles the iPhone v. Android debate.
Love Rocks is no groundbreaking app. The singer teamed up with Rovio Entertainment, the team behind Angry Birds, to create what is basically another version of Bejeweled. Link matching gems and stones on a grid to accumulate points and make it to the next round.
Her boyfriend, soccer player Gerard Piqué, has an online game called Golden Manager, so he connected her with someone from Angry Birds, and the rest is history.
“The fact that Gerard had this online game inspired me to create my own,” she told Refinery29. “It has been like nothing I’ve done before, a new experience. It’s a new platform through which I can communicate with my fans, it’s another outlet for my creativity.”
As you play the game, you’re taken on a journey across the globe. The levels start in Barcelona, then you’re transported to places such as the Taj Mahal and El Dorado. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Shakira game without an avatar of her occasionally making an appearance. She also said she re-adapted some of her songs to use in the game, which, honestly, is a very appealing selling point.
The most telling piece of her conversation, though, was whether she’s an iPhone or Android user. Her answer? “I use both!”
