How to get Windows 10 even if the update isn’t available

Windows 10 is now here and early reviews have been very favorable. Although many can update their version of Windows 7 or Windows 8 to the latest version of the OS, a lot of people are yet to be able to download Windows 10.

Microsoft has decided to release windows 10 in waves, hence even if you have the proper requirements all set up in your computer, you may not be able to download it. Most of us don’t want to wait for Microsoft to tell us ‘OK you can download it now’ and with some help from Reddit’s Window’s 10 forum, we bring you instructions and screenshots of how you can get Windows 10 right now.

At first you will need to go to ‘C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download.’ If you have windows installed in a separate drive such as ‘D’ you will need to replace ‘C’ with ‘D’ in the mentioned command. Once it loads, you can delete all the files or move them to a backup folder. We have done the latter. This will give Windows update a clean slate.

Now go to the ‘Control Panel’ and then hit the ‘System and Security’ option on the left hand side. Hit the ‘Windows Update’ option.

Next, right click on Windows 8 start menu (if you never opted for a traditional start menu) and run command prompt with administrative privilege (Run as Administrator)

Open command prompt and type: ‘wuauclt.exe/updatenow’ but do not press enter. This command will force Windows Update to check for updates.

Now go back to the Windows Update window and click on ‘Check for updates’ on the left hand side. It should say ‘Checking for updates’

While this continues, go back to the command prompt and enter the command which has already been typed in.

Once that is done, you should be able to see the ‘Downloading Windows 10’ update on the window.
